SOAR 2024 Round 5

Friday Practice

Josh forgot to bring his wet tires so he wasn’t able to ride today as it was raining heavy all morning, I was feeling anxious and finally decided I’d better do a few laps to try and shake it off. It’s a good job I did because the rear wet tire was shot – I had two huge moments coming out of the kink, scared the crap out of me! I had to replace it, fortunately Mel had just listed a set of Bridgestones for $100 so I jumped on Heather’s scooter and went down and snagged them.
It dried up later in the afternoon and there was open practice so I thought I’d get another few laps in on the A bike. Unfortunately after a few laps it briefly cut out and the oil light came on as I tipped into the right hander going on to the back straight, since it carried on running I went straight back to the pits to investigate. We found the level sensor mount was broken, very weird – it’s hard to think how anything could get past the fairing to apply a load on it. We removed it and zip tied the level sensor to the frame that holds the clocks and all seemed well.

Saturday Qualifying

Lost Era Lightweight

It had rained again through the night and carried on to mid afternoon. I got a few laps in on the new (to me) wet tires and they felt much better through the kink, and that inspired confidence everywhere else. In the qualifying race I hung on to Spencer for a while and was happy stay on and finish in 3rd for a front row start in the race tomorrow.

Amateur Legends

By the time of the Legends race it was drying up but there were still a lot of puddles around and I didn’t want to burn up my new wet tires so I chatted with Mike and decided to just go out and do 2 laps and then start towards the back tomorrow but in front of anyone that didn’t bother to go out today. As I was going on to pit row Mike assured me that everyone was doing two laps and coming in – only me and two others came in!

Sunday Races

Amateur Legends

I needed a good start to get up front from P10 on the 4th row, the first one went ok but I got blocked and it took me a few laps to get by Ian and try to get back on to the leaders. I didn’t have enough time to catch them but was happy with a podium finish and super happy for Jay to take the win and go Pro with me next season! Congrats bud.

Lost Era Lightweight

Another great start getting the holeshot but then I was all over the shop on the first lap (sorry Spencer!). After that I got settled down and couldn’t keep up with Spencer and Jim so just went for championship points.

When I got home and investigated the issue with the engine cutting out, I found some bad connections in the level sensor connector on the harness side. I replaced the wiring and there was still a hesitation at idle but when I looked back at some GoPro footage from previous rounds, it seemed like it was doing it before so I figured the best thing to do is try it on Friday practice – if it cuts out on the track again, I’ll have to switch to the B bike.
